Vitamin D: Why is it good for us?

Calgary is known for its sunny days and it's constant access to vitamin D. I'm not sure about where you are at the moment but here in Calgary, we're finally starting to have some spring-like weather! The kind that blinds you if you look out the window.

This got me thinking...since the sun is shining quite often, it's a great time to finally start reaping the benefits of the sunshine vitamin!

Why do we need Vitamin D?

While I know vitamin D was good for us, I didn't exactly know why. So, here's a little research on the "sunshine vitamin".

It's called the "sunshine vitamin" because it's produced in your skin in response to sunlight. It's a fat-soluble vitamin in a family that contains D-1, D-2, and D-3. That means you need fat in your diet in order to absorb it.

Vitamin D benefits include the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and the regulation of regular hormone function. Getting enough vitamin D is really important for the development of bones and teeth, as well as improving your resistance to certain diseases. Not getting enough vitamin D could result in bone abnormalities like osteoporosis.

What other benefits does vitamin D offer?

On top of those benefits, it can also help with depression and can help boost weight loss.

Why does vitamin D help you lose weight?

There are a few theories on this. One is that vitamin D possibly reduces the formation of new fat cells in the body. It may also stop the storage of fat cells. Vitamin D can also increase levels of serotonin which can help control your appetite, increase your satiety, which in turn will reduce your body weight and your calorie intake.

You can also get it from some foods and supplements so if your sunlight is lacking, you have other ways to get it. My Healthy Eating E-Guide has a whole section on vitamins, including D. It will tell you where to find them and why they’re important.
