It’s no question there’s been a shift in the world that’s causing a lot of us to pay more attention to our mental health. With the events of COVID-19 it’s easy to feel helpless, sad, and alone. Fitness and staying active can help with your mental help, but with what, and how?
Tips on getting through this scary period include staying connected with friends and family, getting adequate sleep, and practicing good hygiene. On top of all of those tips, what if I told you you could improve your mental health with daily movement?
Can exercise help with mental health?
There are so many other benefits of exercise than the leaner, fitter, faster we're all bombarded with. Regular exercise can help you deal more effectively with things like stress, depression, anxiety, and more.
How does exercise help mental health?
When you workout you are actually putting your body through stress. Your brain recognizes this and releases endorphins which can help relax muscles and relieve tension in the body. That's what gives you that heightened sense of well being after finishing a workout.
In no way should regular exercise replace anything prescribed by your doctor, but it can help.
How long do I have to exercise to feel mental health benefits?
Exercising for 30 minutes 5 times per week will help you reap the benefits. You can also split those minutes into 2 15-minute or 3 10-minute sessions if that is a more realistic time frame for you.
