With Mother’s Day over chances are there’s going to be an overabundance of half-priced chocolate on the shelves of your local store. You can always see them from far off. Wrapped in bright, pretty packages that draw your eye in. Almost like a silent voice yelling “hey, I’m over here!”.
Because of that, I’d like to address a common question I get from my clients.
Is chocolate bad for me?
In a word: no. There are a lot of health benefits to eating dark chocolate actually. Dark chocolate is very nutritious and not only has very high levels of your daily recommended minerals. It also helps with cholesterol, is a powerful source of antioxidants, and can help lower your blood pressure.
Why is chocolate looked upon as bad?
The issue with most chocolate you find on the shelf is they have high levels of sugar and fat, which may go against your doctor’s orders or may not fit within macro levels, depending on your fitness goals. All chocolate should be eaten in moderation for optimal health because of the high levels of fat and sugar it can contain and it’s best to stick with dark chocolate (80% or higher) over milk, or white.
How much chocolate can I eat a day?
The recommended daily portion of dark chocolate is 1-2 ounces or 30-60 grams. 1.5 ounces of dark chocolate contains 190 calories. In comparison, a medium-sized apple contains 90 calories. Opt for healthy snacks as well but dark chocolate is something you can add to your diet in moderation.
